Description

''High Hopes'' finds Bruce Springsteen in a number of different musical settings, and includes the E Street Band members in various large and small combinations as well as guitarist Tom Morello on eight tracks. Besides Morello, the album also includes appearances on several songs by Clarence Clemons, who passed away in 2011, and Danny Federici, who passed away in 2008, on what Springsteen calls "some of our best unreleased material from the past decade." The album was recorded in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Australia and New York City and marks Springsteen''s 18th studio album. As Bruce writes in the albums liner notes, "I felt they were among the best of my writing and deserved a proper studio recording."

High Hopes is less a cohesive album by Bruce Springsteen than a collection of spare parts. There are a few "new" songs that haven''t seen the light of day, outtakes from the Boss'' more recent albums, studio recordings of songs previously only released as live versions, and a handful of off-beat covers. The album sounds as if Springsteen just wanted to clear out some clutter before moving on to other, hopefully more important, projects.

All of this isn''t to say there aren''t some high points on the album, particularly for long-time Springsteen fans. The title track, originally recorded by the Havalinas in 1990, percolates along nicely and features a funky wah-wah guitar solo from Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello. A cover of the Saints'' "Just Like Fire Would" does justice to the beloved original, although some may be turned off by Springsteen''s many adornments including a piccolo trumpet solo. Springsteen also re-creates full-band versions of "American Skin" and "The Ghost of Tom Joad," two of his better late-period songs.

There are also a few clunkers, as you might expect in a collection of this sort. In fact, a couple of the songs ("Frankie Fell in Love," "This is Your Sword") should have remained in Springsteen''s closet.

Overall, "High Hopes" isn''t a bad album and it does have its moments. Die-hard Springsteen fans will probably find something to love and something to hate among the tracks, but there''s nothing to recommend the album to the casual fan or someone unfamiliar with Springsteen work.

Wrecking Ball, bloat and all, had its moments, so it''s gratifying to see "High Hopes" surpass that. The songs might be from all over, but the focus feels tight. It''s a batch not a themed mission statement. Good. The title track opener is a stomper though a little stuffy, and the entire first half feels like the big wheel trying to get itself to roll. "American Skin" is a great song, but this version sounds heavily processed in the studio, which dulls the chilling cautionary tale from "Live in New York City." Much of the album, in fact, adds weird electronic embellishments that do nothing to enhance the music. To be clear: I have never had a problem with electronics - I''m no rootsy purist - but artists choose their sound and sounds for reasons and the add-ons and phasing and squiggles here and on "Wrecking Ball" don''t fit Bruce well. When the songs shine through, however, it doesn''t really matter. I think the aces of "High Hopes" are on the backside: "Frankie Fell in Love" is weird and rousing, "This Is Your Sword" might be the briefest anthem in the Springsteen songbook, but, boy, he lays into it. The next four are as good as Bruce has sounded in a while, yet I just get the sense he doesn''t know exactly what he should sound like in 2014. He''s fishing for a new way to represent and maybe stay modern, when he shouldn''t worry about it. Just play ''em. He reaches back here to 1998 for the "The Wall," one of the best songs he''s ever written, and plays it unadorned, and it''s worth the price of the record. There has been division over his album-ending version of Suicide''s "Dream, Baby, Dream," and I think the naysayers wrongly overlook the Rorschach elasticity of the song''s nature. Compare with Neneh Cherry''s skronking dissolution on "The Cherry Thing," and also with the original, which sounds like Phil Spector''s Wall of Sound streamed through Fisher-Price musical toys and heroin. Springsteen chooses hopeful hymn, and what is so wrong with that?

Just bought this on Amazon, but I am already listening on my Kindle Fire....that is amazing in itself !

I have been a Bruce Fan for over 30 years.....and this one is good. I love the way his voice and style has matured. I love Tommy Morello''s guitar, and all members of the E Street Band.

Having said that - this is Not "Born in the USA" It will not spawn any #! Singles. Instead it is a collection of Bruce''s heartfelt words of wisdom and comfort.

I love that it is not overproduced and that it can move me from cheers to tears.

This is not a dance album, this is not a Pop Album (remember albums ?) It is eclectic and interesting and inviting and BRUCE.
Bruce offers this gift to you, for you to open and explore and enjoy in your own way - to paraphrase The Boss himself "it is like a friend has written a letter, and you can open the letter and read it and re-read it time and again, each time finding another kind of joy."

I understand Bruce has not authored every song......but he makes them his.
Glad I did not pass on this one !

The first thing I thought when I played this cd was how great these tunes would sound live!
Bruce already has done a lot of these live and decided that they needed "proper" studio representations.
Bruce and the E Street Band''s live shows are in comparable and better than ever!
Their live renditions make their studio albums sound almost
(almost) watered down.
So it''s kind of odd for him to take live stuff and make a studio album.
Another odd thing to me is that they have always been an albums band not a singles band.
This cd does not have an underlying theme, just random singles.
Having said all that, it is still new Bruce. As fun and as serious as you want it to be.

Highlights are High Hopes, Down in the Hole, Heavens Wall, the Ghost of Tom Joad, The Wall and Dream Baby Dream.
Not Born To Run or even The Rising but still Bruce and the Boys playing their hearts out.
I can''t wait to hear it live!

What else is there to say about Bruce that hasn''t been said, except, there will never be another one quite like him.

64 years young, and still bringing it ''Night after Night after Night''.

Bruce knows the clock is ticking, and he''s certainly using that as a motivation to keep touring and to create & release new music more often. ''High Hopes'' is a hodge-podge of covers and original material. What it also is, is Bruce''s mantra not to tour without supporting a new record.

While Bruce certainly has at least 3-4 great records left in him, this isn''t one of them, but it still has some greatness within.

Tom Morello certainly brings a different sound to the proceedings, especially on re-recordings of High Hopes & Tom Joad.

Keep bringing it, Bruce, and please play ''Be True'' when u come to South Florida!

Springsteen is a genius. I would recommend this CD/DVD to anyone who understands that we all are connected. High Hopes lyrics are spot-on, the instrumentation and musical score are superb, and Bruce''s phrasing and emphases are warm, tender and touching. His last song, Dream Baby Dream, is a great way to end the album---you feel as if the album doesn''t really end, that hope and dreams go on. There are times when hope and dreams are life sustaining, but it really is our actions which achieve and sustain equity for all. Hope and dreams can be a nice oasis for when we need refreshment. Being proactive is what gets the job done, though. As usual, Mr. Springsteen gives us an abundance of songs on his CDs. He even includes a bonus DVD which gives us 12 songs. Bruce Springsteen respects his audience. He cares about us. He wants us to get our due for the money we spend for his albums--and for his concerts, as well. He knows what it is like to earn that money and he respects that. Gotta love a guy like this!

First off! ... this is one of my favourite Springsteen albums. Pure Boss. Even the tracks not written by Springsteen sound like Springsteen songs. The E Street Band features on most of the tracks...Great! The presence of Morello is a revelation. In fact, the band version of Tom Joad alone is worth the price. (Quick question...why are so many of these Springsteen albums, since Tom Joad, double? I presume its down to the length of the album and that squeezing all the tracks on to a single album would reduce sound quality? Who knows? HOWEVER... who the hell is in charge of quality control in the pressing factory? The crap on this vinyl, brand new and sealed, is disgusting! I have bought 30 year old albums from charity shops which were cleaner than this record. Crackles and fluff from the start. So bad in a number of places that the stylus actually skipped! I had to lift the stylus after every second track to clean and brush the fluff off! I am of a mind to return his record just to make the point! 10 out of 5 stars for the music. Bugger all stars for the lackadaisical approach of the factory. Quick update... after running the two discs through my Knosti Anti-stat cleaning machine it played perfectly. Had the same trouble with a number of NEW vinyls and solved in the same way. What''s with you vinyl record makes? Please get your acts together!!!

I really bought this version of High Hopes for the bonus DVD so I consider the CD as a bit of an extra! The music on the CD is not bad - nowhere near classic Bruce however - and I''ll probably play it a few times before it gets filed away. However the DVD shows Bruce and the E Street Band can still put on a live show like very few other bands can manage! I saw Bruce and the band on the original Born in the U.S.A. tour at Wembley in July 1985 and it may just be the best live gig I''ve ever seen; watching the DVD of the concert from the Olympic Park brought back many happy memories of that summers night. If you have been less than impressed by Bruce''s recent work this DVD will show you why he is still the Boss live. The DVD features all the tracks from the Born in the U.S.A. album in track running order and played by as many of the classic E Street Band as are still with us. The line up includes: The E Street Band: * Bruce Springsteen - lead vocals, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica * Roy Bittan - piano, synthesizer * Charles Giordano - organ, background vocals (replaces the late Danny Federici) * Nils Lofgren - rhythm guitar, lead guitar, acoustic guitar, background vocals * Garry Tallent - bass guitar, background vocals * Soozie Tyrell - violin, acoustic guitar, percussion, background vocals * Steven Van Zandt - rhythm guitar, lead guitar, mandolin, acoustic guitar, background vocals, * Max Weinberg - drums The E Street Horns: * Jake Clemons - saxophone, percussion, background vocals (nephew of the late Clarence) * Barry Danielian - trumpet, percussion * Clark Gayton - trombone, tuba, percussion * Eddie Manion - saxophone, percussion * Curt Ramm - trumpet, percussion The E Street Choir: * Curtis King - background vocals, tambourine * Cindy Mizelle - background vocals, tambourine * Michelle Moore - background vocals, rapping on Rocky Ground * Everett Bradley - percussion, background vocals Special guests: * Adele Springsteen (Bruce''s mum comes on stage for "Dancing in the Dark") * Pamela Springsteen (Bruce''s sister sings on "Dancing in the Dark") If you were at the 2013 concert you''ve probably bought this already - if you weren''t there but like classic Bruce and the E Street Band then buy this limited edition version of High Hopes while it is still available. Five stars for the DVD alone - I''m just sorry I wasn''t there myself!

First off - must admit BIG biased towards Mr S. Long-Term Fan - BUT that doesn''t mean I still can''t make comment....... Coming fairly sprightly after the superb (my opinion, natch) "Wrecking Ball" my initial thought was....."Oh, he''s doing another "......Sunny Day" "quikie" release", BUT purchased anyway. Listened, AND (must say) thoroughly enjoyed and continue to do so - practically daily. I knew he has always been a prodigious writer, so wasn''t wary of the quality, but WOW!!! The New Songs are just fresh and superb ("Harry''s Place" is a stunner), with the Familiar Songs given a totally new kick and lease of life that just shine ("41 Shots" and "Tom Joad") which Bruce has recognised are thanks to his new "Muse" the mighty Tom Morello who puts in just outstanding work here. Literally blistering guitar-work - that just (well) WORKS!!!! So, once again, hat off to The Boss - THANK YOU!!!!!
